Struggling with Anxiety? Try This Mindful Approach

Struggling with anxiety? Learn a simple technique to ease anxious thoughts by noticing them with compassion and creating space to feel calmer.

Anxiety often shows up with a flood of “what ifs” and worst-case scenarios. It can feel overwhelming and hard to separate from reality. One gentle technique that can make a difference is learning to talk back to your anxious thoughts.

Instead of treating anxiety as the absolute truth, try noticing it for what it is — a signal from your mind trying to protect you. You might say to yourself:

Oh hello anxiety, thanks for looking out for me. I don’t need you right now, but I appreciate you checking in.

By naming and responding to anxiety in this way, you create a little bit of distance. This pause can remind you that your anxious thoughts aren’t facts, just feelings and signals. From here, it may feel easier to breathe, ground yourself, or choose a different focus.

Like any skill, this takes practice. But over time, treating anxiety with a touch of curiosity and kindness — rather than fear or frustration — can reduce its power over you.

If you’re struggling with anxiety, counselling can offer a safe space to explore where these feelings come from and how to manage them in your daily life. If you’d like a safe and supportive space to explore what’s on your mind, I offer counselling face-to-face in Ludlow, Shropshire, and online across the UK. Get in touch here to find out more.
